"From the Reader's Perspective"
Augusten Burroughs' Running with Scissors is a very unique memoir. The course of events that occur throughout the memoir is dumbfounding at times and very out of the ordinary. Though these events do appear within the Burroughs book, they are true and relative events that actually took place within his life. I do not believe I would recommend the book if this was not that case. Since Augusten Burroughs did live through these events and became a well-known author despite them, I believe the memoir is worth reading.
Burroughs wrote Running with Scissors to be funny and interesting, but at the same time realistic, since this is his life story. Though many of the names were changed, the information and characterizations are accurate. I like the blunt honesty that he portrays throughout his memoir, not making it flowery. It is a twisted and horrifyingly hilarious memoir that catches the audience's attention from the first page to the last. This book is meant for an audience that is attracted to the blunt portrayals of life and the rich humor that can catch you off guard. I recommend this book to teenagers and adults, but not to young children. I do not recommend this book for children, because Burroughs phrasing may be too vivid and could be disturbing to children. But besides this, I believe Burroughs' Running with Scissors should be appreciated as a memoir that is hard to forget.
